An amazing bike tour departing from Lecce, the beautiful baroque capital city of Apulia, that circumnavigates clockwise the southest part of the “heel” of the Italian peninsula. You will visit cities like Otranto, UNESCO heritage, Santa Maria di Leuca, famous for its lighthouse and for being the meeting point of the waters from the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, and Gallipoli, very well-known for its castle and old city centre.
You will bike from stage to stage, riding through country roads, olive tree groves, pine groves, a natural park, and paths along the coast. You will also experience the traditions from this territory, with food tasting from local producers and a visit to an artisan terracotta lab. You will go on a boat trip to see the most amazing sea caves and crystal clear water and withe beaches. And you will enjoy a dinner with fresh pasta that you made yourself thanks to our cooking class afternoon, and delicious seafood lunches by the sea.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND VISIT OF LECCE
Transfer from the airport (Brindisi) to Lecce. Guided tour of Lecce, the capital of baroque. Introduction to the guides and the program of the week. Welcome dinner.
DAY 2: FROM LECCE TO OTRANTO (56 KM)
Departure from Lecce historical centre to the coast, riding through country roads and olive tree groves. Visit to the town of Acaya and its castle and the protected WWF Oasis “Le Cesine”. After a seafood lunch by the sea, you will start again along the coast to Alimini lakes, another peaceful oasis surrounded by countryside and pine groves. The final destination is the beautiful Otranto, UNESCO heritage. Visit of Otranto and dinner.
DAY 3: OTRANTO AND ITS SURROUNDINGS (35 KM)
The itinerary of the day will take you to Otranto backcountry along Idro river to discover the ancient arts and crafts of the territory and Giurdignano megalithic garden, meeting the dolmens and menhirs from the Bronze Age. Visit to La Cutura botanic garden, home of succulent and tropical plants which are unique in Europe. You will continue visiting the typical “masserie”, country homes, where you will stop to taste typical products. Next destination are the Bauxite caves where you can take a refreshing swim in their sweet waters. The following track is the most distinctive and suggestive of Salento, meeting Palascia lighthouse to the eastest point in Italy, until you get to Torre Sant’Emiliano agritourism, where you can have an aperitivo and a typical dinner in the tower.
DAY 4: FROM OTRANTO TO LEUCA THROUGH THE NATURAL PARK (52 KM)
After a nice breakfast by the sea, you will start to Torre Minervino, that will offer you a unique landscape. The surroundings get wilder and wilder and you will arrive to Santa Cesarea, a special place among tuff caves, and Castro historical centre. You will witness an amazing view on Zinzulusa cave, stretching for 200 m above the ground. The landscape here is of the most varied, and you will meet Canalone del Ciolo, a calcareous canyon famous for its geological, archaeological and botanic interest. The last stage will take you to Santa Maria di Leuca, along the coast, and its sanctuary and famous lighthouse. Typical dinner at a trattoria.
DAY 5: BOAT TRIP AND COOKING CLASS (22 KM)
Today is dedicated to the discovery of Capo di Leuca, where you can see ancient Messapian settlements, towers, olive oil mills, castles and churches from the 10th century, a huge area of great historical and archaeological interest. After a seafood lunch by the sea in Novaglie, you will go on a boat trip to visit the numerous sea caves of the area. The destination is Gagliano del Capo, where you will attend a fresh pasta cooking class. Dinner with local products and the pasta you made with your own hands.
DAY 6: GALLIPOLI AND THE IONIC COAST (65 KM)
The direction changes, and you will start heading North along the West coast, characterized by white beaches and crystal clear waters. You will ride through country roads where you will meet many “masserie”, where you can stop and taste some local products. The destination is Gallipoli with its beautiful castle and historical centre. One last ride to enjoy the colors of the sunset over the sea and an aperitivo with dinner.
DAY 7: GRECIA SALENTINA (52 KM)
The itinerary of the day involves the exploration of Grecia Salentina, a territory very rich in history, art and traditions. You will head East to Cutrofiano where you will stop at Salvino’s ancient artisan lab, where you’ll learn how to work terracotta. The next stage is Galatina, where you’ll stop for a visit of Santa Caterina D’Alessandria church and the beautiful historical centre. Then you’ll ride to Soleto, with its ancient little church, and Sternatia, on an amazing road through olive tree groves.
DAY 8: DEPARTURE
Good bye and transfer to the airport.
