Discover the beauty of Abruzzo by immersing yourself in the most ancient Italian national park. Icon and mascot of the park is the Marsican brown bear, a critically endangered animal which, if you are lucky, you will be able to spot during the trekking together with the Abruzzo chamois. Scanno and Pescasseroli are the villages where the tour tracks start, leading you into the heart of the natural park, where you will trek through beech forests, botanic paradises and waterfalls. You will also meet a local shepherd who will teach you how to make ricotta with the milk produced by his animals… prepare to taste something unforgettable!
This tour is recommended to those who are familiar with outdoor trekking. A little training is required. The itinerary may vary in case of poor weather conditions.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL
Check-in at the hotel and visit of the town.
DAY 2: SCANNO LAKE AND VILLAGE (5 km, elevation gain 350 m)
After breakfast, meeting with the guide and briefing. You will start a ring trek from the village until you reach Scanno lake. This route is also called “heart route”, because the lake looks heart-shaped from some perspectives. After lunch (packed lunch on request) you will have a guided tour of Scanno village. Dinner at the hotel.
DAY 3: CAMOSCIARA (9 km, elevation gain 500 m)
After breakfast, transfer to Opi, and trekking on Camosciara track. This is a nature reserve created to protect the Marsican brown bear and the Abruzzo chamois, now endangered species. The presence of a huge amount of water makes this valley a botanic paradise. Ninfe and Tre Cannelle waterfalls are in fact the destinations of the day. On the way, you will meet a local shepherd who will teach you how to prepare ricotta with the milk produced by his animals… with final tasting of course! Transfer to Pescasseroli where you will spend the night.
DAY 4: MACCHIARVANA RING (15 km, elevation gain 464 m)
After breakfast, you will trek through the amazing beech forest of the National park. The elevation gain is very little, so you will have the chance to enjoy the sounds of nature and see centenary trees, protecting Mount Tranquillo and its sanctuary. In the afternoon, you will have some free time to walk around the place.
