Piedmont region lies in the North-West of Italy, at the border with France. Turin is the capital city of the region, important business and cultural centre, house of the of the Duchy of Savoy since 1562, and then first capital of the Kingdom of Italy after the unification in 1861. The Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, in and around Turin, are now World Heritage.
Piedmont cultural richness is just as large as the natural one. The Alps are an important presence in the region, thus skiing, trekking, biking, and all of the outdoor activities related to the mountains are very popular. Lake Maggiore, with the beautiful Borromean Islands, is another important site of interest for art and sport activities.

But maybe the most peculiar area in this region is the Langhe, the hills one hour driving South from Turin, one of the most important sites for wine production in Italy. Barolo, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Moscato, Dolcetto are among the most famous wines of the region. The vineyards cover the countryside, surrounding medieval and Renaissance towns and castles that rise on the hilltops, offering a breathtaking ambience that will steal your heart. Alba is the city symbol of this area, listed as one the cities with the best quality of life, and with truffle as its typical product, that you can taste in local restaurants or pick taking part in truffle hunting.

Trekking or biking through the vineyards, stopping for a break at a winery to taste the finest wine, is an experience that you cannot miss during your vacation in Piedmont.
