Called the “Green Heart” of Italy, Umbria offers unspoilt and wild nature, hilly areas and forests, natural parks, waterfalls and lakes. But also food and wine and a lot of history and culture. It’s hard to decide where to start from.

Historically speaking Umbria’s cities have played important roles in the Italian history and art. Assisi stands out among all, being home of St. Francis, the patron of Italy, and the starter of the religious revolution during the XIII century. Assisi hosts some of the most magnificent churches and buildings famous all over the world: Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, where you can see the frescoes by the late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto, Santa Maria Maggiore, Basilica of Santa Chiara, just to mention some. Perugia is the capital of the region and is home of one the most ancient universities and historical buildings, such as Piazza del Priori and Fontana Maggiore, but also theatre of the famous Umbria Jazz Festival and Eurochocolate exhibitions. Gubbio is located on the lower side of Mount Ingino and it is an enchanting medieval town, with a lot of squares, narrow streets, ancient buildings and a food specialty: truffle, that you can go hunting with a professional truffle hunter, and taste it in the numerous restaurants of the town.

Wine is an another important component of the food and wine traditions of Umbria: you can taste many different wines, such as Cantico wines, like Grechetto, Merlot, Sangiovese and Chardonnay, or “Sagrantino wine”, a unique breed of grape worldwide famous that can only grow in the little village of Montefalco. You can take part in wine tasting in a splendid location on Perugia hills, where you can also attend cooking classes, or just focus on wine with a dedicated wine tour.

Nature is very amazing too, you can visit Trasimeno Lake and Isola maggiore, or do a walking tour to discover Marmore waterfalls, which are considered some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe. In Monte Cucco natural park, you can visit Monte Cucco caves, which cover 30 km of underground galleries.
