In the past few years, Barolo wine has been appointed as “the king of wines, and the wine of kings”. It is the beating heart of the Langhe, the territory in the South of Piedmont where Barolo is produced. The Langhe territory is a magic land, where the history of wine production blends with the history of the people who have been living there for centuries, contributing to make it fertile, beautiful and most of all welcoming. The landscapes are astonishing: gentle hills, with beautiful colors that change with the changing of seasons, vineyards stretching out as far as the eye can see, ancient “borgos” (villages) nestled on the side of a hill with ruins, be them castles, tower, walls, monasteries, reminding us of the feudal ancient times. Wine appears to be the soul of this land. But we can’t forget the food traditions that often blend with the wine traditions.
This tour allows you to get the best of this land. You will visit family-run wineries, that might be small, but they are the best producers of Barolo, taste different wines, and take part in cooking classes to learn how to cook the delicious recipes of Piedmont food traditions. A guided tour of Alba will let you discover the homeland of the famous white truffle, that you will be able to hunt and eat in the best restaurants; and a visit to Tourin, the capital of Piedmont, will give you the possibility to discover the historical roots of the region and taste the best gianduja chocolate.
DAY1: ARRIVAL AND WELCOMING BAROLO WINE TASTING
Arrival in Alba and aperitivo (by the pool in the right season) tasting the wines of Marrone winery and some food matches. Welcome dinner at the family-run restaurant.
DAY 2: COOKING CLASS AND BAROLO VILLAGE
After breakfast departure to a selected local winery for a cooking class resulting in lunch (you will learn how to cook Vegetable flan with Toma cheese cream, Tajarin with fresh vegetable sauce, Meatloaf with dried tomatoes, Savory carrots and Haselnut cake). During lunch there will be a brief “wine class”, to be prepared for all of the wine tasting of the week. In the afternoon, visit to the village of Barolo and the Wimu, the wine museum inside the Barolo Castle. Easy hiking through Nebbiolo and Barolo vineyards, till Monforte. Transfer back to the hotel and dinner.
DAY 3: MONTEROSSO GRANA AND PRADLEVES
After breakfast departure to Monterosso Grana, visit to the village and see the “Babaciu”, an ancient tradition of straw people scattered all over the village. Transfer to Pradleves and visit to Castelmagno cheese dairy, where cheese of all the small producers of the valley are aged in the proper way, and where we’ll learn more about the famous Castelmagno cheese. Lunch at a local trattoria. In the afternoon visit to San Magno Sanctuary. Transfer back to the hotel and dinner with pizza.
DAY 4: COOKING CLASS AND ALBA
After breakfast departure to Castellinaldo where there will be the second cooking class at a selected winery, resulting in lunch (Tomatoes appetizer, Lasagna from Scratch, Meliga pastry cookies with Zabaione cream. Visit to the family cellar, small quantities but high quality. In the afternoon guided tour of Alba and free time to walk around in the beautiful historical centre. Transfer back to the hotel.
DAY 5: TORINO AND GIANDUJA CHOCOLATE
After breakfast departure to Torino. Guided tour of the historical centre and traditional Piedmontese breakfast, the “Bicerin”. Lunch in the oldest chocolate gianduja producer, with tasting of four different kinds of chocolate. Free time to walk around Torino or guided tour up to the Mole Antonelliana tower. Transfer back to the hotel.
DAY 6: COOKING CLASS AND TRUFFLE HUNTING
After breakfast departure to Serralunga d’Alba. Tour of two selected wineries. Lunch in Monforte d’Alba (if the weather is good on a beautiful terrace). Time to rest at home and late afternoon there is the third cooking class with mamma Giovanna (Chicken filets with vegetables and Carpione sauce, Risotto al Barolo, Brasato al Barolo, Tiramisù). After dinner the magic experience of night truffle hunting with a fourth generation truffle hunter, and midnight snack.
DAY 7: RODDI, LA MORRA HIKING AND COOKING CLASS
After breakfast to La Morra trekking. It is an easy hiking from Roddi to La Morra, walking through the vineyards. In La Morra, lunch in a trattoria focused on wines. Follow up of the hiking, to a selected winery. Bus will be available for anyone who doesn’t want to hike to take them straight to the winery. Cooking class at the winery with mamma Giovanna, resulting in our farewell dinner (Peppers with Bagna cauda, Polenta with veal and sausage stew, “Bunet” Chocolate & Amaretto Pudding.
DAY 8: DEPARTURE
End of the tour and departures to the airports.
