This is an amazing experiential travel for those who love to discover the culture and traditions of the country they visit. The tour follows the trail of bread in the most scenographic frame you can imagine. Matera, the ancient city dug into the rock, is a marvel of architecture and history that won the title of European capital of culture for 2019. By spending a few days in this fascinating city, you’ll feel like being a time-traveller gone back in history. Matera is situated in Basilicata, an incredibly charming region in the South of Italy, still not discovered by mass tourism. A real hidden treasure chest, a land with ancient traditions related to rural life and to its peasant and pastoral heritage.
The main gastronomic product here is the typical bread of Matera, famous for its extraordinary flavor, fragrance and digestibility. Nowadays, it is still made by the traditional method, with the flour obtained from the local wheat, the durum, long leavening times and cooked in wood oven. Besides being a characteristic and high quality product, the bread of Matera is also surrounded by history and tradition. Until the end of the 1950s, the families of Matera kneaded their own bread at home and brought it to the bakery for cooking in wood oven. Thus every family stamped their brand on the dough, to recognize their bread after cooking. That’s why the stamps for bread are a typical handicraft product of Matera. Also the shape of the bread has its own meaning.
With this tour you will discover the real soul of Matera, its history and traditions, that are amazing just as much as its architecture. You will stay in an amazing hotel hosted in the enchanting “case grotte”, the typical housed dug into the rock in one of the “sassi di Matera”, the more ancient areas of the city. The tour will have a special focus on Matera’s main product, the bread, so you will be able to follow the production from wheat to the finished product.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND WELCOME IN MATERA
Transfert from Matteotti train station to the hotel in the “sassi” of Matera (transfer from airport on request). Welcome cocktail and accommodation in your room a typical cave-house. Dinner at the hotel restaurant.
DAY 2: MILL, TREKKING AND BAKERY
After breakfast, visit to the flour mill. Trekking in the Murgia park and packed lunch. Free afternoon in Matera and free dinner. Night visit to the bakery to see how bread is produced.
DAY 3: GUIDED TOUR OF MATERA AND COOKING CLASS
After breakfast, guided tour of “sassi di Matera”, with entrance to a rural church, a cave-house museum and with final taste of typical products. Free lunch. Cooking class at the hotel of home-made local pasta and dinner with the food you contributed to cook.
DAY 4: DEPARTURE
Breakfast and transfer to Matteotti train station (or airport on request).
